The Basics of Blackjack Tournaments

The majority of blackjack tournaments require their players to compete against each other instead of the dealer. Just like standard blackjack, tournaments require players to closely reach 21 without surpassing it, or going bust.

Card Values

In blackjack, the values of the cards are the numbers stated on them. Of course, the only exception to this are face cards; all of these equal 10. It is up to the player as to whether an ace they are holding equals one or 11.

Dealing the Cards

Even though each blackjack tournament will vary slightly in regards to its rules, the way the blackjack tournament is played remains the same. Each player and the dealer will be given a face-down card. Then the dealer distributes face-up cards to other players and himself. After that, the players have the choice of either getting another card – hitting – to reach or equal 21 or staying with the two cards they have – standing.

Hitting and Standing

Even though dealers must follow casino and local regulations for hitting and standing, the players do not have to abide by the same rules. This means players may keep on hitting, even until they bust. On the other end of the spectrum, blackjack players can stand after their first two cards are dealt. However, the idea is to hit, if necessary, until the player has 21 or as close to it as they possibly can.

Tournament Rules

Even though casinos have a certain set of rules for their dealers to follow, blackjack tournaments are unique in their rule sets and each set is different depending upon the type of tournament being played and the casino hosting it. It is recommended that anyone interested in registering for a tournament review all of the rules beforehand. There may be some rules that players do not want to abide by.
